Cat Day in Japan

Today is Cat Day in Japan!

While here in the US we have National Cat Day on October 29, Japan has it every year on this day, February 22nd.  According to an article on Kotaku, the reason they have it on this day is based on a play of words.  The wordplay is based in the words “Nyan” (meow), and “Ni” (Two).  So 2/22 reads as “Nyan Nyan Nyan.”

My husband Brad and I recently adopted a cat last month.  His name is Titus, and one minute he can be such a sweetie but then a total booger the next.

So for today’s Cat day, here is a list of some of my favorite Anime cats/cat girls.

Luna, Artemis, and Diana, Sailor Moon:

Of course I would start with my main trio from my most favorite anime, Sailor Moon!

Luna is the first one to arrive as she encounters Usagi on her way to school.  Usagi gets curious as Luna is sporting band-aids in the shape of an X on her forehead.  Usagi is surprised once she pulls them off and realizes that Luna is sporting a moon symbol.

And the rest is history.  Usagi becomes Sailor Moon and is later revealed to be Princess Serenity of the lost Moon Kingdom.

Artemis first appeared in Codename: Sailor V as Sailor V’s guardian.  When Sailor V eventually becomes Sailor Venus, Artemis travels with her to Japan to join the other Sailor Guardians.  Like with Luna’s name being a play on words in reference to Earth’s moon, Artemis is derived from the Greek Goddess of the Hunt.

Last but not least of the trio is Diana.  Not only is Diana the companion of Chibi Usa/Sailor Chibi Moon, she is also the future daughter of Luna and Artemis.  Diana is the Roman name for the Goddess Artemis.

In the “S” movie and the manga, we see the cats in their human form.  During the Sailor Star story arc, you find out that the cats actually had their own planet (Planet Mau, like meow, eh), which was destroyed due to Sailor Tin Nyanko’s betrayal and allegiance to Sailor Galaxia.

Jiji, Kiki’s Delivery Service:

When a witch turns 13, she must go into the world and train.  Kiki leaves home and lands in the town of Koriko.  There with her cat familiar Jiji, they start a delivery service in exchange for room and board.

Jiji is Kiki’s familiar in Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service.  Typical of a witch to have a black cat, right?  I love Jiji because in the English dubbed version put out by Disney; it was one of the last roles from comedian and SNL alumni Phil Hartman.  At one point Kiki does lose her connection with Jiji, thus only hearing him meow instead of talk.  But once she gains her confidence back, she can hear him again.

Meowth, Pokemon:

“To protect the world from devastation.  To unite all peoples within our nation.  To denounce the evils of truth and love.  To extend our reach from the stars above.”

“Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light.  Surrender now, or prepare to fight!”

“Meowth, that’s right!”

What would the trio of Team Rocket be without the wise cracking Meowth?  He is one of the only Pokemon that can speak human.  In a flashback episode, it was revealed that Meowth learned how to talk and walk upright like a human after being rejected by a girl Meowth.  Unfortunately all his training was all for naught, because now she considered him even more of a freak.  That is when he joins Team Rocket.

I like Meowth because when it comes to all of the Team Rocket shenanigans, he seems like the brains of the whole operation.

Aisha Clan-Clan, Outlaw Star:

Well, I did mention I would get to cat girls, so here it goes.

In the late 90’s during the Toonami era of Cartoon Network, a really cool spaghetti style space western anime aired.  That show was known as Outlaw Star.  The show did sport a cat girl… Sort of.

Aisha Clan-Clan is part of a cat race known as the Ctarl-Ctarl.  She used to be one of their top officers until a run in with the pirate Hilda cost her her position.  She tries to exact revenge on Hilda’s partner Gene Starwind on a few occasions until she realizes she has no where to go, and cannot even go back to her home planet.  She then becomes part of Gene’s team searching for the Galactic Leyline.

Molly, King of the Cats, The Ancient Magus Bride:

In episode 4 and 5 of The Ancient Magus Bride, Chise and Elias journey to a town that is known for being the Kingdom of Cats, Ulthar.  They are greeted by the current reincarnation of the king of cats, Molly.

So pretty.

Molly proceeds to tell them about a corruption in the towns lake that must be taken care of.  The longer they stay in town to investigate the problem, they find out what is causing the corruption.  Molly eventually tells the story on how the first King of Cats and the current cats ancestors took down a villager who was being manipulated by a mage to use cat’s blood to save his ailing wife.  The spell does nothing to help the wife and it kills her instead.  After he goes into a rage, that is when the cats took matters into their own hands.

Molly ends up sacrificing her last life to help Chise ride the lake of the corruption and guide the couple who died years ago into Heaven.

There you have it, the list of my favorite Anime cats.  Was there any I missed?  If so, leave it in the comments below.  And happy Cat Day!
