A few clips have surfaced online of the new Ghost in the Shell movie, which opens a week from tomorrow. The first clip is a condensed version of the opening.
Now here is a clip from the original anime to compare. It seems pretty close other than some story changes.
The second clip released it the famous water fight scene. This clip shows Scarlett Johansson as Major fighting a random bad guy.
Now here is the same scene from the anime. Looking at these two together, it seems pretty clear the studio was really trying to keep to the source material. You will have to fast forward to about five minutes in.
I am really excited to see how this played out. I was really unsure about this at first (see previous blogs “Ghost in the Aw Hell No,” and “A Ghost Foot in the Mouth.”). But now seeing more of these clips has made my decision more certain that I will give this one a chance and see it in the theater. Hopefully this will be a shout out to any studio on hopes of making a live action version of an Anime property that you can be successful if you just keep with the original material instead of creating something “new,” “different,” or saying it’s a “reboot.”
Ghost in the Shell stars Scarlet Johansson, Takeshi Kitano, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbaek, and Juliette Binoche. It opens next week on March 31st.
