Last night as I perused my Netflix list, I was excited to find a wonderful documentary on my suggestion list. Netflix is now streaming the documentary “Yume to kyôki no ôkoku” (english title “The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness.”). The documentary was filmed over the course of a year at Studio Ghibli during production of Hayao Miyazaki’s last film, “The Wind Rises,” and it ends with Miyazaki’s recent retirement announcement.
It is an exceptional documentary; and it is not just for anime fans, or fans of Miyazaki’s films; but also fans of films in general and animation. It gives a wonderful perspective on Miyazaki himself and how he works. I plan to watch it again, and will have a review on it soon. I give it 5 stars. You won’t be disappointed. Trailer is below.
